Our Relationship to the Municipality of Anchorage
ACPA, Inc. is responsible for developing funding solutions for maintenance and upgrade projects through our operating budget and/or fundraising efforts. For major facility infrastructure and upgrade projects, such as the roof, a bond must be approved and included on the municipal ballot. The Municipality oversees funding of other major projects, such as the fire panel, through ACPA’s MOA managed capital reserve account. This account is limited in its capacity and for the most part is funded solely by ACPA, Inc. through a monthly deposit of 10% net revenue and an end-of-year balance deposit, when available. Use of these funds requires Assembly approval.
The partnership between the Municipality and ACPA, Inc. was founded on a shared belief: that Anchorage deserves a dynamic, accessible Performing Arts Center that reflects the diversity and creativity of its community. Because of this mission, we:
prioritize |
subsidize |
reinvest |
access and equity in scheduling and space usage, and optimize opportunities for large events to help support subsidies
|
usage for our eight resident companies and dozens of nonprofit users, in addition to keeping rental rates far below market for these users and local artists
|
every earned dollar from commercial programming and services to support the building, operations and its users
|
To Live & Love The Arts
We wholeheartedly believe in this model. However, as a nonprofit ourselves, ACPA must find a way to fund rather than absorb the subsidies, while also managing millions of dollars worth of deferred maintenance and modernization needs.
We have made repeated efforts to get the PAC included on local and state bonds to address urgent capital improvements
- from outdated fire alarm systems and HVAC failures, to aging stage equipment, safety and overall infrastructure. Despite our past best efforts, bonds have not been supported, leaving ACPA, Inc. to fill the gap and further delay much needed upgrades. We have done so quietly and determinedly because we believe in this mission. But the reality is this-
The building is aging.
The needs are urgent.
The cost of inaction is growing.
With no dedicated public funding stream for capital improvements, we have reached a turning point. We must evolve the model-not to reduce our service to the community, but to ensure it can continue for future generations.
What’s Next
The upcoming capital campaign is not just about repairs or finances. It’s about preserving a landmark, honoring decades of community support and engagement, and positioning the Performing Arts Center for the future.
We’re committed to continuing our mission—to serve our community, resident companies, nonprofit users, artists, and grow our audiences. But we’re also committed to being honest: we can’t do it alone.

As we prepare for our capital campaign, we need to increase our annual operating support. We've been conservative over the years with asking, and we know that we must provide our community more opportunity to support our operations and in turn serve so many other organizations in our community.
