Since 1981 Alaska Junior Theater (AJT), has been bringing theater to Anchorage youth. Often AJT performances are the first and only time for most Anchorage students to be exposed to theater, which is why they are such an integral part of the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.
AJT brings programs that allow students to experience education outside the classroom. When teachers bring their students to an AJT show, they are given study guides about the show to not only prepare their students for the theater, but to also connect what they will see to their studies. These include classroom projects in history, social studies, geography, science, and other fields. Connecting students to education in a new way often inspires students who don’t feel a spark in a traditional education setting.
Over the last 44 years, over one million students have come to an AJT show, whether with their school or with their parents. Each of these students has been touched by theater in a way that would never be possible without AJT, and we are honored they are one of our resident companies. Learn more about them at akjt.org or on Facebook.
